CORNWALL College received a new school bus and a fund, which school administrators say will provide a continuous source of development assistance for the 110-year old institution.

Cornwall College, widely considered one of western Jamaica's premier learning institutions, was this week presented with several donations in cash and scholarship bursaries totalling US$17,500 (J$1.19m).

The South Florida chapter of the Cornwall College Old Boys Association donated US$10,000, the Cornwall College Trust Limited donated US$500 while members of the South Florida OBA will be donating US$7,000 worth of scholarships which will benefit seven new students at the start of the next school year.

The school could benefit from another sizable donation soon as, according to Lance Gibbs, president of the South Florida Chapter, they were in contact with at least two more overseas-based Chapters - New York and Canada - and had gotten commitments for another US$10,000 disbursement, hopefully by the start of the next school year.

Denham McIntyre, the school's headmaster, said the US$10,000 donation from South Florida would be used to help purchase classroom furniture for the seventh grade class when school starts in September.

The scholarship pledge is a continuation by members of the South Florida Chapter to assist needy students and each would receive a bursary of US$1,000 to help with books, uniforms and other necessities.
