Dear Cornwallian Nation,
On behalf of the Board, Administration and the track team at Cornwall College, let me express our profound gratitude for your invaluable support in helping us travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, last week (April 27 – May 01), to participate in the running of the 122nd Penn Relays Carnival.
Once again, our small team performed creditably as we won two third place medals, Alrick Ottey in the Long Jump (7.45 m), despite taking only one jump and Kobe-Jordan Rhooms in the High Jump (2.03 m).
Class 2 athlete and Triple Jumper Owayne Owens had a best effort of 14.28 m for 10th place overall.
Our 4x100 m relay team, without one of our best athletes who aggravated an injury, won their heat in 42.99 seconds, running in less than ideal conditions, but just missed making the finals of the Small Schools section as we had the 10th best time and only eight made it to the finals.
Our 4x400 m relay team of Renardo Phillips (54.20), Brandon Phillips (50.17), Stevel Doeman (51.94), Matthew Brown (51.48), ran their best time of the year (3:27.78), but failed to advance past the first round of competition.
Overall, the experience, especially for the boys who were travelling for the first time and those who participated in the Penn Relays for the first time as well, was invaluable and no doubt will play a part in "converting boys into men of might" as our school song says.
Planning for next year's 123rd renewal of the relays has started already and until January 2017, when planning gets into high gear, again we say ‘Thank You’ once more.
‘Disc aut discede’.
