On Friday June 18, 2021, Cornwall College received a total of 115 Dell Latitude 14 inch laptop computers. The machines are a gift to the school made possible through a collaborative effort of the South Florida, New York and Canadian Old Boys Associations at a total cost of $US60,000.

Given the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdown of schools, there were a number of students without devices to connect and attend classes remotely. The Principal of Cornwall College, Mr Michael Ellis therefore made an urgent request for the Old Boys Associations to assist in providing devices for students whose learning was negatively impacted due to the absence of suitable computer devices.

The procurement of the devices has initiated a new era of collaboration between the various chapters of the Old Boys Associations who all maintain a common unity, passion and desire to give back to the school. Through the corporate affiliations of one of our alumni, a successful partnership was established with Dell’s corporate office that deals with charitable organizations and education initiatives in developing countries. This led to a further collaboration with Royale Computers Business Solutions, a local Dell agent through which the pricing, specifications, licensing and maintenance were arranged and confirmed.

The machines will be the property of the school and will be loaned to students on a need based, no cost basis with an annual re-evaluation. The ultimate goal is to develop a robust technological footprint at Cornwall that will act as a catalyst to empower students in this competitive global economy.

The Cornwall College Alumni Association of South Florida staged its first event since the outbreak of Covid 19 on Saturday, March 27, 2021. The event was a Drive-By Fish Fry and Raffle that was held in the parking lot of the Holy Sacrament Episcopal Church located at 2801 N University Drive, Hollywood FL.

Our Association relies very heavily on the successful staging of events to raise funds for various projects and scholarships at Cornwall College our Alma Mater. The need for assistance at Cornwall College has never been greater.

This event was the first of its kind held by the Association and was a resounding success. The Fish Fry was completely sold out days in advance. There were over 200 orders, in addition, to support for the raffle as well as donations from many persons. Patrons were treated to succulent and flavorful fish prepared by chefs Gary and Lance as well as bammy and fried dumplings prepared by Melvin.

The occasion was a true Drive-By. It was organized to observe social distancing and meals were collected without having to leave the vehicle. Provision was also made to facilitate some persons who choose to enjoy their meal at the location. We arranged a few chairs and tables on the grounds of the Church Hall and a few patrons were able to sit and enjoy their meal in a great outdoor atmosphere while enjoying relaxing music in the background.

On behalf of the board and membership, we would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to all who supported this event. Your support and participation ensured a very successful outcome. Many thanks also to the planning team as well and those who assisted in making the experience one to remember.

As we continue to deal with the restrictions and life adjustments imposed by the pandemic, we will seek more opportunities to stage other fundraising events in a safe and responsible manner. We look forward to emerging from the pandemic and being able to resume events such as our Family Fun Day and Dinner Dance Gala.

Please stay tuned for announcements accordingly.

Track and Field has historically been the proverbial forgotten child at Cornwall College. It is a known fact that the reputation of the School’s Sports Program lives on because of Football. As a result, most of the resources for infrastructure and sports program support is channeled into that discipline. It is now time to level the playing field.

The School Administration’s public adoption and proclamation /of the moniker, “Champs in Four,” highlights the institution’s intention to challenge for a top five placement at the ISSA Boys and Girls Athletic Championship by the year 2025. The school which boasts a 3rd placed finish in the 1960s is making a mass appeal to all its stakeholders to get on board in this seemingly, assumed “Impossible Mission.’

Reports of Student- Athletes suffering injuries from training on an uneven track are far too common and continue to restrict the program’s development. As a result, the School’s Sports Department is partnering with the various Old Boys/Alumni Associations and Year Groups to raise funds to do some renovations and improvements to the running track and jump pits. This represents the first phase of the “Champs in Four” effort COVID-19 has grinded school sports to a halt across the island, and has presented a grand and unique opportunity to get the work done now during this un-ceremonial pause.

Project Timeline:

Project is anticipated to start on March 1st, 2021 and run through till April 15th, 2021 (Contingent on funding).

Project Execution

1) Areas marked A,B, C on the image will be filled with a mixture of soil and washed sand to build up to desired surface height.
2) Running track will be rolled to compact the composites, for a level and even surface.
3) Surface will we watered and grass seeds planted
4) Field will be watered and fertilized to encourage desired grass growth.
5) Roller will be brought back in to roll the surface area to even and compact new growth.
6) Purchase and installation of “45 yards synthetic covering for long/triple jump runway”

Our Cornwall College Boys Need Your Help!

Cornwall College is the third oldest high school in Western Jamaica, delivering a rich academic and co-curricular experience while nurturing aspirations in our young Jamaican men to make a positive difference in the world.

The Cornwall College Alumni Association in South Florida over the years has been able to provide well-needed support to the school, as well as the children and their families through scholarships, donations of supplies and equipment and modernizing the school’s facilities.

We need your help!

The advent of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has accentuated and exacerbated the numerous financial constraints the students and parents of Cornwall College already grapple with while crushing the Alumni’s calendar fundraising events. Our young men who depend on programs like PATH or the school’s welfare programs are now helpless and without even a daily meal, worsened by breadwinners facing pay-cuts and loss of jobs. Additionally, some are in danger of physical, verbal, and other abuse, being more vulnerable at home.

The school is also moving towards online teaching while the majority of the students are without suitable electronic devices. Our young men need your help more than ever!

Give now and give our young men a chance.

Be the secret hero these young men need to develop the capacity to bring a positive change to their communities and the world. Your gift of any amount will help provide food supplies, electronic equipment, and well-being to children and their families.

We encourage you to impact a child’s life today.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The building that houses the Science Labs at Cornwall College is in need of repairs. For many years it has been neglected with little or no rehabilitative or restorative work done. The walls are in need of reinforcement. The Physics, Chemistry and Integrated Science Labs need to be retrofitted with modern workstations, white boards, interactive projectors, and instrumentation that will enable the delivery of modern 21 st century science education. Additionally, modern electrical re-wiring, proper ventilation and plumbing systems are required to improve and address safety and public health concerns.

The Labs have outlived their usefulness and for all practical purposes are in need of modernization. The physical plant that houses the Physics, Chemistry and Integrated Science Labs has fallen into a state of disrepair and is in need of urgent attention. The walls are falling apart and need to be renovated and reinforced. The electrical circuits as well as the plumbing and ventilation systems are also areas that need to be given priority. The entire skeletal structure of the Labs need to be retrofitted with work stations, fume stations, white boards, overhead projectors, as well as more modern instrumentation and teaching aids.

Cornwall College is reputed for its effervescent exploits in the field of Science, however the school has been handicapped for many years because of the poor quality and inadequacies of the Science Labs to facilitate experiments. As a result of the high usage of the plant and equipment there is increased stress on the resources making them inadequate for our usual excellence in producing top Science students, not only in Jamaica but throughout the Caribbean.

If we are going to regain and retain our vision of providing a school climate that promotes academic excellence in Science, that will prepare students to function effectively in a changing global 21st Century environment, our Science Labs must be modernized.

Background

The South Florida chapter has over the years used funds derived from fundraising events to support various initiatives at Cornwall including scholarships, sports, the solar project, other initiatives to support teachers and school related activities. However, project-based fundraising commenced in 2018 with the Bathroom project and continued in 2019 with the Science Lab Renovation project. Project based funds are restricted to the particular purpose for which the funds were requested from donors. The Chapter therefore must reflect detailed accountability and transparency regarding the use of these funds for compliance with the 501c3 non-profit requirements as mandated by the IRS as well as to withstand scrutiny by donors regarding the prudent use of the funds. This type of accountability is observed generally by the Chapter but is particularly important given the restricted designation of project-based fundraising. The Science Lab Renovation project will therefore be executed with the same level of accountability and transparency and using the same methodology as the Bathroom Renovation project that was successfully completed in September of 2019.

Objective

  1. To renovate and modernize the Science Labs to enable students to more readily crystalize the theoretic aspects of their Science program through more frequent exposure to practical work in the areas of Physics, Chemistry and Integrated science.
  2. Equip the Lab facilities with the appropriate instrumentation to carry out research in a modern facility.
  3. Improve the structural integrity of the building for safety, comfort and an environment suitable for the delivery of Science based lessons.
  4. The Science Labs will be compliant with National and International standards as well as Public Health standards for the delivery of 21st Century education.

Success factors/Deliverables

  1. Provide students with modern instrumentation and other equipment to aid their projects and assignments.
  2. Improvement in the results for Integrated Science, Physics and Chemistry at both internal and external exams.
  3. Additional workstations to facilitate the growing need and increased number of students opting to do Science.
  4. Safe and secure Science Labs that is welcoming and conducive to teaching and learning.
  5. Adequate, sufficient and well-resourced building accommodation for the delivery of 21st century Science education.

Stakeholders

Designated stakeholders will be the following

  • CCAA South Florida Executive
  • CCAA South Florida Donors
  • President of each chapter
  • School Administrative team (Principal)
  • Cornwall College School Board

Project Scope

The work for this project will be concentrated on the Chemistry Lab that is located downstairs of the Science Lab building. The building also houses the Physics Lab which is upstairs. The Physics Lab is also in need of renovation, however this work was not included in the current scope of this effort. The Integrated Science Lab is also outside the scope of this project.

The Science Lab Building is dedicated to a “Garth Taylor”, a renowed Physicist that attended Cornwall. There is a plaque on the building that reflects the name and he was honored by the Montego Bay Chapter at a Homecoming ceremony some years ago but he has since passed away. Inquiries will be made to locate Mr Taylor’s survivors in an effort to derive support and funding for the building. If this is successful the scope will be expanded to include the Physics Lab and perhaps the Integrated Science Lab. Also efforts will be pursued to appeal for additional funding from other chapters and prominent Cornwall physicians and other science based professional Cornwall Alumni. Again, should these efforts be successful, the scope will be expanded to include renovations for the Physics and Integrated Science Labs.

High Level Project Schedule
